Is My Child at Risk for Weight-Related Health Problems?!

The CDC’s Child and Teen BMI Calculator is a valuable tool for assessing whether a child or adolescent is at a healthy weight for their age and height. BMI (Body Mass Index) percentiles are used to categorize weight status in children and teens, taking into account age and sex. Here’s what the results mean:

The pediatric BMI calculator widget is a valuable tool for assessing children's growth and health. It helps to screen for elevated BMI percentiles, which is an important first step in understanding a child's health status.

However, it's essential to note that not all children with elevated BMI are necessarily at risk for health problems. By evaluating family history conducting physical examinations, and performing lab tests, healthcare providers can determine individual risk levels and discuss suitable treatment options tailored to each child's needs. This comprehensive approach ensures that every child receives the appropriate care and guidance.

Underweight: BMI less than the 5th percentile.
"Normal" BMI: BMI between the 5th and 85th percentile.

Overweight: BMI between the 85th and 95th percentileObesity: BMI at or above the 95th percentile, further classified into:● Class 1 Obesity: BMI between the 95th and 120% of the 95th percentile. (Possible risk for medical complications) ● Class 2 Obesity: BMI between 120% and 140% of the 95th percentile.(At increased risk for medical complications) ● Class 3 Obesity: BMI greater than 140% of the 95th percentile(At HIGH risk for medical complications)  ** For patients with a BMI percentile above the 95th, I recommend that they be seen by a pediatric obesity specialist like myself to ensure they get a thorough medical, lab, lifestyle, medication, and family history evaluation to assess their current and longterm health risks. Just like you, I want your child to live a happy and healthy life!
